Valor Ridge Academy is our family's school: one student, two parents teaching, and a home organized around the work of helping a boy become a faithful, capable man. This site holds the lessons, the things we make, and the record of his growing up.

What this is
Bennett is in fourth grade. Melissa and I teach him. Math and English happen every morning; Bible, every day. History and science run through the week. Most afternoons include PE, piano, something being built, or the twenty-four-mile round trip to jiu jitsu. That drive is still worth it.
Classical Conversations gives the year its backbone. Around it, we choose the books, programs, projects, and practice Bennett needs now. The framework is shared; the education remains personal.
Homeschooling lets the lesson fit the boy instead of asking the boy to fit the lesson. Bennett can move quickly where he is ready and stay with something when he is not. The work can leave the desk, become a project, and matter beyond the page. We would rather see one real thing finished well than forty worksheets completed and forgotten.
We keep records because California asks us to, but mostly because memory is unreliable. Years from now, Bennett should be able to open a folder and see what he read, built, struggled with, and learned to do. Some of what we make may help another family. Every piece began with one boy in mind.

How we operate
A family is not a company. It still benefits from knowing what matters, who is responsible, and whether the plan is actually working. We write down our goals, review them honestly, keep the records, and change course when the evidence says we should.
