Valor Ridge Academy is our private home school. Our son Bennett is the student; Melissa and I are his teachers. It is small by design, personal by necessity, and built around the boy actually sitting at the table with us.
We wanted our son taught by people who know him well enough to tell from across the room whether he is stuck, bored, curious, or simply hungry. At home, the pace can change with the child without lowering the standard for the work.
There is another reason, and it took longer to say plainly: we wanted what Bennett learns on Tuesday morning to agree with what he sees on Saturday afternoon. If we teach that work is worth doing well, he should watch us do work well. If we teach that a man keeps his word, he needs to see what that costs when keeping it is inconvenient. Those lessons are not confined to school hours. They are taught by the life of a household.
Classical Conversations provides the backbone of our curriculum and a shared rhythm for the year. CTCMath carries the daily math work. Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) develops composition, and Logic of English supports reading, spelling, grammar, and the foundations beneath them. Around those programs, we choose the books, practice, and projects that fit Bennett. Bible is daily. History and science run through the week. PE is usually outside. Piano continues. Jiu jitsu is twenty-four miles round trip twice a week and worth every one of them.
What makes the days ours is that the work rarely stays at the desk. A lesson on measurement becomes a build. Money problems use real numbers from the egg sales. A question about Proverbs follows us to dinner, where the best part of the lesson often begins.
Financial understanding belongs in the education too. We want Bennett to learn how useful work creates value, how money is earned and managed, and how saving, investing, giving, and providing enlarge a family's ability to choose wisely. Wealth is not the identity. Stewardship, responsibility, and independence are the lesson.
We would rather he finish one real thing than complete forty worksheets. He moves fast where he's strong and slow where he isn't, and nobody has to be held back or dragged along for that to work.
Valor names courage governed by faith: the strength to do what is right, especially when it is costly. The ridge is the ground ahead — beautiful, demanding, and crossed one deliberate step at a time. The cross reminds us who gives the work its meaning and to whom we answer.
Our motto is train the hands, guard the soul. Both halves matter. Capability without character can become dangerous; conviction without capability can remain only an intention. We want Bennett to know what is good and to become useful in its service.
For two reasons.
The first is that we make a lot of material — worksheets, trackers, records, schedules — and it costs us nothing to put it where another family can use it. Everything in the library is free to print.
The second is the real one. In fifteen years Bennett should be able to open this site and see exactly what he did when he was nine. What he read, what he built, what he wrote, what we were trying to teach him and whether we managed it. That page is here, and it's the reason the rest of this exists.
We are not presenting ourselves as experts, and this is not a formula. It is one family's attempt, written down as we go — including the parts that do not work. Take what is useful and leave the rest.
Math, history, science and PE. Keeps the records. Runs Valor Ridge Systems, an IT and managed services company, which is the other thing this house is built around.
English, reading and Bible. Holds the rhythm of the school day, and the standard on what actually gets finished.
